As vegetable prices rise, greenhouses go bankrupt

Over the past year, almost all staple vegetables have become more expensive. According to traders and experts, prices are rising slowly but steadily, and over the past 12 months, the rise of commodities such as cucumbers and potatoes is around 30%. However, the record holder is cabbage, the price of which has jumped almost 58%. According to data from the State Commission on Stock Exchanges and Commodities Markets, compared with January of last year, potatoes are more expensive by 20%, onions – by 10%, and tomatoes – from 13 to 17%.

In this context, Bulgaria could find itself without Bulgarian vegetable production in 2022 due to the energy crisis. Some consumers are already saying that the high prices of fruits and vegetables will cause them to lose certain products. “We do not observe shock price movements, but on the other hand they are smooth and constant, which is not a good trend,” said Vladimir Ivanov of the State Commission on Stock Exchanges and commodity markets.

According to some retailers at this point, the new prices still aren’t making their way into people’s pockets. According to others, the increase is significant for the end customer at this time.

Ivan Kaburov runs a greenhouse in Malo Konaré. This winter, unlike other times, it is empty. “Last year tomatoes were planted here, which at the time were already one meter tall. At the moment the greenhouse is absolutely empty, clean and all the invoices we have made show that it is not. profitable to plant early crops, ”says Ivan. He added that the production process has become more expensive, mainly due to the increased costs of heating in the greenhouse. Therefore, it will not work until the weather warms up to keep the cost down. His colleagues will do the same.
