Discover the Northland Fishing Tackle Elite Nedster Series
BEMIDJI, Minn. – In pole vault, it was Dick Fosbury who changed the sport with the Fosbury Flop. In ice skating, US Olympian Dorothy Hamill left her mark with the Hamill Camel. And, in the realm of fishing, writer and innovator Ned Kehde developed a finesse bass fishing bait that is now a household name – the Ned Rig.
Combining a mushroom-style jig head with a small, soft, buoyant plastic, Kehde’s brainchild has been responsible for countless catches over the past decade. Rather unassuming at first glance, the jig and plastic combo prompts curious bass to investigate and suck up what appears to be a small baitfish, crayfish or aquatic invertebrate.
Now Northland is coming to the table with a custom jig designed specifically for Ned Rigging. New Nedster jig Elite series and Weedless Nedster Jig feature a mushroom shaped head, designed so that when paired with the right bait, the plastic and hook stand up on the bottom to imbue realism and promote positive hooks. Speaking of hooks, all Nedster Jigs are rigged on an incredibly sharp and strong Gamakatsu 1/0 hook. Northland worked with pros to select the perfect gauge wire that is thin enough for quality hooks on spinning tackle, yet strong enough that it won’t let you down when you have to fight through cover and rig a slob bass.
When it comes to rigging, your favorite plastic is locked in place with the Nedster’s smart bait holder. Its precision placement and supreme architecture won’t tear your baits apart.
Recent history teaches that Ned Rigs succeeds when others fail. Even moody fish succumb to innocent looks and actions. More committed fish quickly suck it out the back of their mouths. Better to bring pliers to take out this jig…
Using a Ned Rig is also basic. The easiest technique is to throw, let the Nedster hit bottom, and begin a sequence of short jumps with pauses in between. It is not uncommon for Ned Rig followers to let the bait sit for ten seconds or more. Speed up or slow down the process depending on fish activity or how much water you need to cover. Nedsters can also be fished faster than a dropshot, while still being in the finesse category.
Northland’s Nedster Jig works efficiently on sand, gravel and bounces off rocks – classic habitat for smallmouth bass. The Weedless Nedster Jig also takes over for tackling largemouth bass in the vegetation. Its durable titanium grass guard allows the Weedless Nedster to easily navigate through short-bottomed grass and along weedy edges, not to mention navigate through the woods. Also note that the titanium weeder will keep its solidity and perfect positioning fish after fish.
A Ned Rig is a valid choice all year round. That said, there are times and places where it steals the show, especially when other presentations fail. The Nedster works wonders on fish in a hurry and in clear water where bass are wary of everything. Additionally, the Nedster Jig excels during cold water periods when fish are less active, as well as in the fall and winter when bass go deep and hug the bottom.
The market is also full of plastics developed especially for Ned Rigs. The key to these baits is their buoyancy, small size and subtle yet easy to perform action.
Nedster Jigs are best fished on spinning gear. Choose a medium-light spinning rod in the 7-foot range. Pair it with a 2000 or 2500 size reel spooled with an 8-10 pound braid finished with a fluorocarbon leader to aid invisibility.
The new Nedster Jig and Weedless Nedster Jig are available in 4 sizes (1/8-, 3/16-, ¼- and 5/16 ounce) and 4 colors (Black, Chartreuse, Pumpkin Green and Rusty Craw). Nedster Jigs come 3 per pack, Nedster Weedless Jigs 2 per pack. The MSRP for both is $5.99.
Both models will be available at the end of 2022.
