Pompano Beach bandits steal more expensive fishing gear
POMPANO BEACH, Florida. – Another Pompano Beach business owner says he had expensive fishing gear stolen, as scammers continue to target boats and businesses in the area.
Last month, Local 10 News told you about a boat captain who had nearly $25,000 worth of rods and reels snatched from Pompano Beach.
After airing this story, some of the reels were recovered. But this captain isn’t the only business owner dealing with bandits.
Mike Lipski says he has the same issues.
He said his business, Reel Deel Bait & Tackle on the South Federal Highway, had been targeted three times.
In a recent incident, he said a man walked around the store, spending about 30 minutes asking about reels and other equipment.
Then he waited for other customers and made his choice, targeting a Tabacom electric reel and kite rod worth around $1,200, a pretty big deal.
“He literally, he planned it, he supported it,” Lipski said. “He grabbed it behind his body, then he literally spun in the right direction where he could spin with them, and then, literally, just as fast, was out.”
Lipski said the scammer “wasn’t the smartest”.
“He got ‘Miller’ tattooed on his arm, clearly in the video,” he said.
Fishing gear can accumulate quickly and sea snakes know it. Worse, Lipski said, there is a market for these stolen goods, and the people who buy them are fueling the market.
Lipski says the boating community in South Florida is tight-knit and he hopes others will see videos of the scammers and get involved, follow the trend and help these businesses stay afloat.
“I’m a single dad,” he said. “(I) owned a few businesses here in Pompano. I come to work everyday, you work hard.
